When PAL Robotics designed their first prototype over 20 years ago, this also marked the beginning of their collaboration with motor manufacturer and electronics specialist TQ. The development team was looking for a suitable brushless motor for the prototypes and found the solution in TQ’s ILM motors.
The frameless motors enable very precise position and torque control at both low speeds with high torque and high speeds with low torque. This feature is crucial for the natural, fluid movements that users expect from humanoid robots, which greatly contributes to the acceptance of the technology, particularly in human-robot interaction.

As robot platforms continued to evolve, the focus shifted not only to technical performance but also to scalability and cost-effective mass production. PAL Robotics therefore transitioned from the ILM series to the ILM-E series as development progressed.
The ILM-E motors were developed as a cost-optimized alternative to the premium ILM series for scalable applications and larger production volumes.
Today, thanks to their precision and efficiency, as well as their compact design and reliability, ILM-E motors are key components in various robot solutions from PAL Robotics, such as humanoid robots, mobile manipulators, and service robots. The ILM series formed the technological foundation during the early development phase, while the ILM-E series supports the transition to scalable mass production.
