Request a project
Do you want to coordinate the fieldbus protocol, number of ports, and real-time requirements, and select the appropriate platform? We will personally handle your request.
Many automation tasks depend on reliable communication between controllers, sensors, and actuators. This is precisely where fieldbus systems come into play, increasingly Ethernet-based. TQ supports you with embedded platforms designed for hard real-time operation, robust interfaces, and predictable implementation. Ethernet-based fieldbuses, in particular, are gaining importance as production networks become more interconnected and communication between different levels needs to be easier to integrate.
Ethernet fieldbus with Sitara: Profinet and EtherCAT
For demanding applications, we rely on Sitara MCUs and MPUs that support industrial Ethernet protocols such as EtherCAT and Profinet. This allows Ethernet-based fieldbuses to be implemented in an embedded platform when real-time and robust communication are paramount.
What matters in fieldbus projects in practice
Three points are typically crucial for fieldbus systems to function reliably in the field:
Suitable TQ platforms for fieldbus systems and real-time Ethernet
To help you quickly find the right entry point for the fieldbus system , we group the selection according to project phase.

Series basis: Embedded Modules
With the TQMa64xxL and the TQMa243xL, TQ offers two embedded modules based on a common design. This simplifies implementation, facilitates project scaling, and allows switching between two CPU families without having to redesign the core architecture. While the TQMa64xxL with Arm® Cortex®-A53/R5F is designed for Linux-based and more demanding applications, the TQMa243xL with Arm® Cortex®-R5F focuses on compact, real-time tasks. Both modules are therefore particularly well-suited for fieldbus and TSN applications in industrial communication.
Evaluate quickly: Starter kit
For headless applications with real-time requirements, the STKa64xxL starter kit (evaluation kit based on TQMa64xxL) offers a quick entry point. Highlights include four real-time Gigabit Ethernet ports for fieldbuses and two CAN FD ports, supplemented by additional interfaces and integrated safety functions.

A fieldbus system connects devices in the field and enables defined data exchange between the controller and peripherals. For many applications, this forms the basis for stable, real-time communication.
Ethernet-based fieldbuses are frequently used when systems are more extensively networked and integration between different network levels is to be facilitated.
In the context of the Sitara platforms, we support applications related to Profinet and EtherCAT.
The quickest way to get started is with the STKa64xxL starter kit, which is based on the TQMa64xxL module. It provides the most important interfaces directly and is designed so that you can immediately begin evaluating fieldbus applications.
These modules are the ideal base system if you're looking for a compact and scalable platform for industrial communication, control systems, or fieldbus applications. Their key advantage: Both variants are pin-to-pin compatible and can be used in a common design. This allows you to scale between the AM243x MCU and AM64xx MPU as needed, without having to redesign the module.
Up to 4x real-time capable Gigabit Ethernet for fieldbus or TSN applications plus up to 2x Gigabit Ethernet for fast data communication are provided.
