Intelligent objects (intelligent devices), secure data communication, worldwide management as well as centralized and, to some extent, decentralized storage and data processing form the basis of the implementation. Reliable and secure systems on all levels are necessary for this. These systems must also offer low power consumption and computing power tailored to their application. Secure operating systems and software stacks together with dedicated applications, all being precisely customized to the hardware components used, are necessary for data management, service (including updates, worldwide management, etc.) and the needed security mechanisms.

 

We provide support when you implement your individual IoT solutions with the focus on hardware and embedded software (BSPs, drivers and software stacks).

The products and services we offer extend over the entire product lifecycle from conception to development, production and all the way to long-term service (->TQ Services). Everything we offer is provided on a modular basis for subassemblies and complete devices and systems.

For customers who prefer their own in-house developments, we also supply pre-qualified OEM and ODM modules such as processor modules, hardware kits and modularly constructed system platforms. These help minimize cost and development times as well as the time and money used for certification and product maintenance.

IoT - Intelligent devices

For IoT, an intelligent device represents an object that is connected to the Internet by way of a network connection (wireless or wired). As a result, it is possible to access the object's configuration and data. Values can be read and actions controlled remotely. If an intelligent device is used to read data from its environment and/or to actively control actuators, the intelligent device is a representation of its environment, for example, a room (with temperatures, conditions such as closed windows, and much more).

TQ offers a variety of different embedded modules (TQ Minimodules) for the implementation of intelligent devices.

The performance classes extend from simple microcontrollers all the way to high-performance 64-bit CPUs.

TQ relies on processors from the leading manufacturers such as Intel, Freescale and TI and can handle applications on x86, ARM and Power Architecture.

For the simple implementation of IoT devices, TQ already offers pre-qualified software stacks and BSPs especially designed for the IoT area for selected modules. These are already ready for or handle important issues such as reliability, security, worldwide management and the software interfaces to centralized cloud structures. The close cooperation with software partners such as Wind River (Wind River Linux with IDP 2.0) and Sysgo (PikeOS) facilitates the realization of professional total solutions in minimum time.

Examples of intelligent devices from TQ

Energy Manager

The Energy Manager is a very flexible OEM product for measuring and modeling the power consumed or generated in rooms and buildings. It can be configured in accordance with customer requirements and its construction can be tailored on a modular basis both in hardware and software. In the standard version, the measured data are stored and processed directly in the device. It can be connected to the network by Ethernet or WLAN. As an alternative, a connection using RS-485 is also possible. Higher-level gateways, which, for example, provide additional security features as well as functions for data processing and filtering, may access the Energy Manager over a Modbus.

Building automation

This intelligent device is designed for decentralized room automation and equipped with a high-performance processor that can reliably handle even demanding tasks. An integrated switched Ethernet port handles communication in distributed control systems and to higher-level management systems. Modbus and EtherCAT connections are available. The device can connect to the Internet by way of a gateway that handles additional security features for the external connection.

I/O modules can be added to this intelligent device: The variety of connection facilities is well designed for the needs of modern room automation: KNX, DALI, ENOCEAN, SMI, MBUS in addition to several digital universal I/Os and two solid-state relays. 

Once connected to the Internet, this intelligent device can represent a complete room with its sensors and actuators.  This approach can provide a powerful IoT total concept including worldwide maintenance. A centralized management system together with higher-level evaluation and optimization can best be realized in this way.

IoT - Gateways

If devices or systems do not have a direct connection to the Internet, this bridge can be implemented using gateways. In this way, devices and systems on local networks or with local interfaces can be connected to the Internet by way of higher-level networks. In this situation, the gateway also takes care of the necessary matters such as security and management.

Gateways can perform additional functions such as data capture, data conditioning, data filtering and controlling sensors and actuators. If the gateway also has a graphics interface, it can provide features such as local visualization.

IoT - Data communication (routers & switches)

 

Data communication is the basis for IoT. As a result of the data volumes that continue to grow, the efficient and reliable distribution of these data is an important topic. Even redundant communication paths are required for specific IoT applications.

Embedded modules from TQ, which come equipped with Freescale QorIQ processors, are particularly well-suited to applications of this type. With these modules, individual communications applications, despite having a powerful and complex architecture, can be implemented with a modest initial investment.

IoT - Visualization

 

Web-based services are usually used to visualize the variety of data, system configurations and logical structures. Manual interaction or reaction to events is also connected with visualization for the most part.

In this case, standard PCs or notebooks are generally used because management and administration tasks are performed in the office. However, visualization options are also used on-site, for example, in industrial buildings or outdoors, so that these options must often satisfy special requirements. External effects such as dust and spray water or requirements such as drop protection or resistance to vibration specify the required product characteristics in this case.
